DEPARTMENT OF CITY AND REGIONAL PLANNING
The Department of City and Regional Planning was established in 2014 under the Faculty of Architecture. As its aim, the department will offer a four-year undergraduate program at the beginning of the 2019-2020 Academic Year. The primary goal of the department is to train students to comprehend city and regional issues, provide critical views and propose creative and alternative plans and designs for the urban and regional matters within their context. In achieving this goal, consideration for developing skills in spatial development on the basis of public interest and professional ethics holds great importance as one of the department’s primary aims. Further to that, the program encourages students to comprehensively understand the interdisciplinary aspect of city and regional planning.
The “Sustainability Targeted Education” vision of the faculty also becomes one of the most important pillars of the department’s structure, where the contents of the program is structured on the basis of paying careful attention to all social, economic, urban politics, environmental, historical and regional planning and urban studies’ subjects. Since cities are constantly evolving similar to living organisms, the education and research on cities should also be able to follow a similarly dynamic path. Therefore, within our program qualitative – quantitative, national – local, international and interdisciplinary approaches are adopted in order to enable students to gain a holistic and systematic perspective.
The curriculum of the program is prepared to equip students with both practical skills and theoretical knowledge. Delivered through various fields of study starting from numerical analysis techniques to societal, cultural, ecological, socio-economic and spatial analysis techniques and methods. The planning studio, as the main spine of the program, provides opportunities for students to bridge the gap between theory and practice. The studios are offered under the supervision of academic staff, each of which has a rich and differentiated professional background, with some having international backgrounds.
